Working Remotely

Rory Hennessy

There has been recent media attention about a "Digital Nomad visa". The Government itself announced during its election cycle that they would be looking into creating a digital nomad visa. What has happened however, is simply a clarification of a grey-area, where visitors to New Zealand were potentially breaching their visa conditions by working remotely.

In other jurisdictions like Canada, common sense prevailed early. They recognised that remote workers would likely have to attend to emails or prepare documents while traveling on holiday. This is something visitors to New Zealand have been doing for decades too, but INZ were vague about whether or not it was allowed.

We finally have word that it's okay - you can work remotely (with exceptions). This includes things like answering work emails, or preparing documents in the normal course of your remote work.

Visitors will need to keep in mind tax rules however (particularly the 92 day rule) when deciding if they want to undertake remote work for an offshore employer or not. You can find out more about tax obligations here.

Great write-up. Going for a remote job could be an easier entry point for people abroad, especially suited for social media managers and other online / frontline roles.
