Working in New Zealand as a Nurse

Nursing wanting to work in New Zealand, along with their local counterparts, must have registration with the New Zealand Nursing Council.

They may also need to complete a Competency Assessment Programme (CAP) if the Nursing Council requires it. Not all foreign trained nurses must complete a CAP course. The best way to find if you do, is to contact the Nursing Council. You can find out more about applying here.

It is important to note that having passed a CAP course does not guarantee Nursing Council registration, and neither guarantee a job offer. You will still need to secure a job as a nurse either by applying directly, or with a recruiter.

It is possible for people to apply for Accredited Employer Work Visas as a nurse, but people who otherwise meet the Green List criteria can apply for residency straight off, before entering the country. It is important to search the Green List to make sure your particular role fits with the ANZSCO code/occupation listed, and that you also meet the Green List requirements (usually either registration, experience or salary requirements generally).
