Immigration New Zealand (INZ) experiences a high volume of student and visitor visa applications during the summer as applicants prepare for study/visits in the upcoming calendar year. Due to this peak period, processing times are longer, so it's crucial for anyone planning to study in New Zealand in early 2025 to submit their application well in advance - according to INZ (and me).
INZ have noticed a pattern of applications being lodged 6 weeks due to the requested arrival date in New Zealand, which is unwise as you will likely lose money on your flights. It is recommended by both INZ and industry members that applicants apply around 4 months in advance, to account for slow processing times, and other issues that could arise, the like the source of your study funds, medical or character issues, and whether INZ believes you are a genuine student (and not someone trying to find a loophole to arrive here then apply for refugee status for example).
INZ have mentioned in communications with the immigration industry recently that incomplete or substandard applications are pushing out processing times generally. The concept of a "decision-ready application" is often used - that the applicant has provided all documents INZ require. Sometimes it's impossible to know what a Case Officer may request, so pre-empting issues arising is what I do - making sure the quality and quantity of evidence is sufficient.'
Please also be aware that as of October 1 (over 2 weeks ago), INZ fees jumped, sometimes doubling. They are unlikely to decrease again, and this is just a side effect of inflation.
